Forests of Thailand: FLR (Forest Landscape Restoration) in the country and in the region

Thailand has approximately forest covering 31.47 per cent of the country. Thailand’s forest policy aims to recover the country’s forest area to 40 per cent of total land area, with 25 per cent allocated for conservation and 15 per cent for economic purposes. Beside the national forest policy, the National Strategy also aims to increase the country green area up to 55 per cent which include all type of forests and tree outside the forests.

The Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) approach had been apply in the wilder range along the country from the top of the mountain to seashore. These FLR’s include forest restoration, community forest, forest recreation, economic forest plantation, agro-forestry etc. which the engagement of all stakeholders among local, national, and regional. In some practices is the pilot with could be scalable and some practices is also successful.

There are several practices that Thailand implements to improve livelihood of its citizen while still contribute to the country economic development and environmental. National Land Policy is one of the mechanisms of the country in landscape management level. There are also regional cooperation support for implement FLR such as Mekong Lanchange Cooperation, International Model Forest Network, LoCoFoRest Programme, APFNet, AFoCO etc. These had driven new innovation which public awareness raising on the important of the forest. All FLR in Thailand is support and response to country forest goals, SDGs, UNSPF and other international forest related commitments. This side event will support the UNFF on the implementation of the United Nations strategic plan for forests 2017-2030. The representative from successful FLR project from regional cooperation organization which is also CPF members will be invite to share their experiences with Thailand. Also representative for government agencies of Thailand will share the best practice with some private sector innovation that contribute to FLR in the country. Then the discussion on the possibility of scalable of those FLR practices. Also the possibility of strengthening cooperation in the regional level which the pipeline projects which will be implement shortly.
